3 Great Cameras for Parents

Updated: Feb 17, 2022

I think some of the most precious photos are the ones you capture yourself in the midst of everyday life. It can feel like there is a ton of pressure these days to take fancy photos, especially when you see people on Instagram who always seem be taking effortlessly beautiful photos of their families. It can be overwhelming trying to find the right tools to document your family life. Here is my advice: Don't get the fancy camera. Don't spend 2k on something that is a pain to carry around and that you don't have time to learn how to use properly. You don't need the nicest camera in the world; what is going to matter in the long run, is just that you took pictures. Don't let fear of not having perfect pictures slow you down. It's really just about what helps you take photos of your kids while staying engaged with them. Childhood photos are one of the best gifts you can give your kids, but so is just being present and stress-free. These cameras should help you accomplish both.

1. Olympus TG-5

When it comes to documenting family, I always say let your kids take pictures!!! Letting your kids be a part of taking pictures of the family allows them to be creative and its also a way for you to get in some photos instead of always being behind the camera. I love the Olympus TG-5 because you can give it to your kids and not worry about them breaking it. It can pretty much handle anything they can do to it. Its shockproof and waterproof. They could literally drop it in the toilet and it will be fine. Take it to the pool or the beach and take it off your list of things to worry about. This is a camera that doesn't have to be off-limits.

2. Your Smartphone

Don't underestimate the camera you already have. Smartphone cameras have come so far and people often discredit them because they are 'just phone cameras'. The truth is that you can take GREAT photos on your phone. This is really one of the best tools because its almost always near you! You can whip it out in a couple seconds and its not bulky to carry around. If you want a bit of an upgrade, consider buying attachable lenses for you phone like the awesome Moment lenses that can help you create truly stunning images! And if you really want to up your game, there are tons of resources online that can help you take better pictures using just your phone, like this video.

3. Instax Mini 90 -or any instant or disposable camera.

These cameras are great for capturing memories, but also a really fun experience for your kids. There is something super special about having a physical photograph in your hands, and it's something that kids don't get to experience a lot these days. This is also great for teaching kids to think carefully about what they want to take pictures of because there is a limited number of shots. This generation ok kids will experience so many things digitally, instant and disposable cameras are an easy way to make sure they also get to experience the magic of film!

What do you guys think? What cameras do you use to take photos of your family?
